This is the name given to this area by the First Nations peoples living here hundreds of years ago. A very fitting title indeed – the Cowichan Valley has the highest average temperature in all of Canada. Approximately 25% of Vancouver Island's farmland is located in the rolling, fertile Cowichan valleys – the abundance of local farmers markets and nurseries proudly showcase the bounty. In one afternoon you can visit artisan cheesemakers, sample local free range chicken and lamb, and hunt for shellfish on the numerous ocean beaches. And what better than to pair with these finds? Cowichan is known as the heart of Vancouver Island's wine region, with award winning wines garnering recognition from near and afar.
The pristine Cowichan Lake District is teeming with wildlife, ringed with mountains and ideal for a family home or outdoor adventure. The area is easily accessible by car – about an hour south to the Provincial capital of Victoria or 45 minutes north to the Island’s hub city, Nanaimo. From those ports, Vancouver and the mainland is 1 hour and 40 minutes by ferry. But why leave? You’ll find everything you need right here.
